Family FAQ

You asked:

My best friend is always writing about her boss in her personal blog. Could she get fired?

The Online Family answers:

If her blog is discovered, your friend could definitely get fired for blogging about her boss -- and it's already happened to others. The most famous case of "being fired for blogging" is probably the creator of Dooce. Heather B. Armstrong says she was fired for blogging about her boss and co-workers (even though she didn't name names). Also, if your friend is posting to her blog from work, she could get in trouble for doing personal business on company time and the company network. Some companies may also fire bloggers for breaking confidentiality rules by mentioning things about their firms or co-workers that are supposed to be kept under wraps. Though your friend has a free-speech right to speak her mind, she should be aware that employers have fired workers for saying too much online.
